As our roof was leaking so bad, it started to affect our gypsum ceiling. It started to sink. We covered large areas in the attic with plastic tarp to prevent the intruding water from destroying drywall and ceiling. This was in 2022.
When we asked roofers if they could fix our roof, we got the same answer from all of them. We had to first get the solar panels removed. When we then asked other solar companies what they would charge to remove our panels, they all declined regardless of what we would pay them. They referred to the original installer and liability concerns and said we should contact them. Nobody would touch the installation.
Only toward the end of 2024 did we find a genuine and professional solar vendor who would help us. We explained our situation and told the owner the same we had told every other solar company, that we would be happy to sign any waiver of liability and pay whatever was needed to get he solar panels removed to have our roof repaired. The new vendor agreed.
At the turn of 2024/2025, the new vendor then removed our panels and inspected our installation top to bottom with the following findings:
- the brackets that hold the panels were fastened with screws that penetrated the underlayment
- many tiles underneath the solar panels were broken as well
- the electric installation was inferior, wires were connected using wire nuts
- no nets or measures to prevent birds from nesting had been installed, about 100 lbs of bird poo had to be removed
Following images were taken after removal of all panels documenting aforementioned findings
